MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Despite
Chappelle Whitney posting a career-high of 30 points, the Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks men's basketball team (3-9, GSC: 1-5) fell just short against the Christian Brothers Buccaneers (2-7, GSC: 2-4) 69-64 on Saturday evening from Memphis, Tenn.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
Whitney wasted no time getting the Warhawks on the board when he drilled a triple and followed up with a layup.
Â
A tie at 14-14 was broken by
Jayden Doyle's layup, but the exchange of points continued as CBU tied it back up at 18 points apiece.
Â
The Bucs scored the next four points to take the advantage, however, Whitney responded with four points of his own to keep the score even.Â
Â
Once again, the home team edged ahead, taking a 30-24 lead before the final media timeout of the first half.
Â
Colby Williams and Whitney combined for six points before the clock expired, but the Buccaneers held a 36-31 cushion at the halftime break.
Â
Second Half
Christian Brothers came out strong in the second half, extending their lead to 44-35. Another deep ball from Whitney brought AUM back within six points, but that is where the difference stayed for a majority of the second half.
Â
C. Williams nailed a jumper just after the 10 minute mark to make the score 56-53, but CBU added four more points to stay ahead.
Â
Whitney's bucket with 6:45 left to go followed by his pair of free throws cut the orange and black's deficit to just one point at 60-59.
Â
Doyle drew a foul and made one of his shots to even the score at 60-60, before some back and forth tied up the score at 64 points apiece with less than a minute to go.
Â
The home team made a layup to lead 67-64 with 31 seconds on the clock, giving AUM one final change to even the score.
Â
Ultimately, the Bucs' defense held sturdy and the Warhawks were forced to foul, resulting in a 69-64 final score with Christian Brothers walking away with the win.
