Late Layup Sinks Warhawks in GSC Opener at TNU

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene Trojans (4-1, 1-0 GSC) registered a layup with less than five seconds left in regulation to sneak past the Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks women's basketball team (0-7, 0-1 GSC) in the Gulf South Conference opener for both teams on Thursday night at Trojan Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warhawks used a 7-0 run to start the game and led 13-6 after one period.

Defensively, the Warhawks held the Trojans to a 3-for-19 shooting mark (15 percent) in the quarter as they held the lead for the entire quarter.

Second Quarter
Despite shooting just 35 percent in the quarter, Trevecca Nazarene flipped the script to take a 20-19 lead into the halftime intermission.

Four different players scored in the second for the Trojans, including five points from Brianna Burgess, and the Trojan defense held the Warhawks to six points on the other end of the floor.

Third Quarter
The two teams combined to score 49 points in the third thanks to 17 combined made field goals and 11 made free throws as the Trojans took a 46-42 lead into the game's final 10 minutes.

Fourth Quarter
Back-to-back baskets by Trevecca Nazarene to begin the fourth pushed the lead to nine points before a 10-0 AUM run capped by a Tamora Brown three-point play put the Warhawks in front 52-51.

Down one with 13 seconds to play, AUM's Nevaeh Small drew a foul on an offensive rebound and subsequently drained both free throws to send AUM in front 61-60.

Out of a timeout, however, the Trojans converted a layup by Burgess with three seconds left to lift TNU to a win.
