Warhawks Put Scare Into Third-Ranked Chargers, Fall 106-104

Four players scored at least 20 points for AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Playing without three starters, the AUM men's basketball team went toe-to-toe with No. 3 Alabama Huntsville before falling 106-104 at the AUM Athletics Complex on Thursday night.

The Warhawks had four players score in double figures, led by Chappelle Whitney's 24 points. Trent Coleman had 22, while Jamarious Martin and Max Ndiaye each had career-highs of 22 and 20, respectively.

AUM (9-15, 6-13 Gulf South) shot 47 percent and made 14 3-pointers while committing just two turnovers.  The Warhawks also had 13 offensive rebounds that led to 26 second chance points.

The Warhawks are now in a 3-way tie for eighth place in the GSC with three games remaining. The top eight teams make the postseason tourney.

UAH (25-1, 20-0) shot 67 percent and got a monster performance of 41 points from Tommy Murr as the Chargers won their 25th-consecutive contest.

Early on, the game had the makings of the track meet that it turned in to as the teams scored on the first eight possessions. Neither team led by more than four points over the first 12 minutes before UAH used a 9-0 run for a 42-32 edge with 6:11 left in the half. AUM answered with a 9-0 stretch of its own with triples from Ndiaye to bookend the run. The Chargers led 54-52 at the break.

The Orange and Black scored on four of its first six possessions to start the second half as it grabbed a 62-59 lead. The didn't trail again until the 3:39 mark of the game. The teams traded baskets before UAH went up 106-103 with 7.1 seconds remaining. As they did at the end of the second half, the Chargers chose to foul and not let AUM get a potential game-tying 3-pointer, instead putting them on the line. Darrian Joseph made 1-of-2 free throws and after getting the rebound, the Chargers threw the ball deep and batted it around to run the final 2.1 seconds off the clock and escape with the victory.

AUM will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday against West Alabama (12-13, 9-11). Tip-off against the Tigers is at 4 p.m. following the AUM-UWA women's game.
