Baseball Drops Two Close Contests To CBU

Hayden Grier & Cole Strachan both went yard for the Warhawks in Game One

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The AUM baseball team suffered a pair of heartbreaking defeats to Christian Brothers at QV Lowe Field on Friday.

CBU scored five in the ninth to win the first game 5-2 and then scored the final five runs in a 6-4 win in the nightcap.

The teams will conclude their series on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Hayden Grier had three hits, including a solo home run in the first game, while Tyrese Rooks reached base six times in the two games. Brendan York also had a 3-hit day with a sacrifice fly and a steal.

The Warhawks had three extra base hits but left a combined 19 runners on base.

AUM is now 7-18 overall and 4-10 in Gulf South Conference action.

Game One – CBU 5, AUM 2
The Warhawks loaded the bases in the first two innings but were unable to push any runs across.

In the fourth, Hayden Grier connected on his first home run of the season with a solo shot to left that gave the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.

Cole Strachan led off the sixth with a blast of his own to increase the AUM lead to 2-0.

The Bucs scored five runs in the ninth on three hits to claim a 5-2 lead. Their first came run with one when Sam Walker hit a solo homer to left. They followed with a pair of runs coming on fielder's choices, an RBI double and a sacrifice fly.

The loss spoiled a strong outing from Clay Slagle, who allowed just three hits while striking out five and walking just one in five innings. Charlie Bagwell (1-1) was saddled with his first loss of the year after surrendering three runs on a hit and two walks in the ninth.

Game Two – CBU 6, AUM 4
CBU struck first in the second game when Cory Steinhauer walked, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a Jalen Smith single back up the middle.

AUM took the lead with two in the bottom of the first and added two more in the second for a 4-1 advantage. In the first, Kyle Hipp scored on a Riley Orr single and then Orr scored a batter later, advancing from second to home on a throwing error by Tate Gentleman. In the second, Brendan York had a sacrifice fly and Rooks drove in Ryan Revera with an opposite-field base hit to left.

The Bucs tied it at four in the third on a 3-run home run by Jalen Smith.

They loaded the bases in the fifth and were able to score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Tate Gentleman. Patrick Mangel hit a solo home run in the seventh to stretch the lead to 6-4.
