JACKSON, Tenn. – No. 6 AUM softball team swept a 3-game series at Union with two clutch wins on Saturday at Fesmire Softball Field.
In game one, AUM collected the team's 12th shutout of the season with a 5-0 victory. The finale featured a comeback win for AUM on a pair of long-balls from
Jasmine Sneed and
Reese Cauley.
AUM improved to 29-9 overall and 20-7 in Gulf South Conference play. The Warhawks won their fifth-consecutive series and grabbed sole possession of first place in the GSC with two weeks remaining.
Game 1 – AUM 5, Union 0
AUM got ahead early with a run in the first inning.
Chloe Baynes opened the game with a single and was scored on a RBI from
Lexi Love.
In the fourth and fifth innings, the Warhawks extended the lead with a pair of runs. AUM strung together four consecutive, two-out hits to score two in the fourth.
Meredith Kellum picked up two RBIs. In the fifth, Sneed singled and stole two bases to allow for the RBI by
Haley Ann Frank.
Chelisa Newsome started for AUM and picked up her 12
th win of the season after she threw seven scoreless innings for the team's 12
th shutout of the season as well. Newsome totaled seven strikeouts in game one on Saturday.
Offensively the Warhawks were led by Baynes,
Rebecca Komers and
Lexie Bullock all with two hits. Kellum drove in a pair of runs. Sneed and Baynes both stole a pair of bases as well.
Game 2 – AUM 6, Union 4
Once again AUM started the top of the first inning with a run, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to respond and score their first run of the series.
Union scored two more in the third inning to take their first lead of the series as well, 3-1.
Cauley started in the circle for AUM and went the full seven innings with eight strikeouts to tie her season high. She picked up her second win of the weekend and improved to 15-5 on the year.
The Warhawks came back from a 4-0 deficit with five runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Sneed came up huge in the sixth, winning a 13-pitch at-bat by fouling off 7-consecutive full count offerings before crushing a 2-run shot for her second homerun of the season to put AUM within a run of Union. In the seventh, Komers started the inning off with a double off the top of the wall and scored on another 2--run homer, this time by Cauley to put the Warhawks in front.
Wheat would also come across to score on a throwing error by the Lady Bulldogs for a late insurance run and put the Warhawks up 6-4.

AUM will be back on the road at Delta State next weekend with the series starting on Thursday, April 17 with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. CT.
