Chi Alpha Sigma announces Avery Dickerson as a 2024-25 Nick Mourouzis Postgraduate Scholarship recipient

RIVER FALLS, Wis. -- Chi Alpha Sigma is proud to announce that Zachary Weis of Nebraska Wesleyan University and Avery Dickerson of Auburn University at Montgomery have been selected as the recipients of the Nick Mourouzis Postgraduate Scholarship for the 2024-25 academic year.

"We are thrilled to award this year's postgraduate scholarships to Avery and Zachary," Kellen Wells-Mangold, executive director of the National College Athlete Honor Society, said. "They have demonstrated themselves to be not just outstanding collegiate athletes, but tremendous students and conscientious campus citizens. It's a privilege to assist them in the next steps of their educational journey."

Dickerson (Albertville, Ala./Albertville) spent four seasons in the circle as a pitcher on the AUM softball team, helping the Warhawks to NCAA Division II Tournament appearances in all four years. She finished her playing career with a 34-10 record with 24 complete games, six shutouts, and a 2.72 earned run average, earning a pair of All-Conference honors along the way. A first-generation college student, Dickerson starred in the classroom as well, picking up Gulf South Conference Honor Roll distinction in all four of her collegiate seasons, along with two Easton/NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete awards. Dickerson also dedicated much of her free time to volunteer efforts throughout her college career, with a specific focus on healthcare initiatives. From participating in events to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer's research to gaining hands-on experience at local clinics, Dickerson's desire to help others has led her to pursue a doctorate in physical therapy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, with the long-term goal of becoming a women's health physical therapist focused on pregnancy, postpartum, and infant care.

Weis (Omaha, Neb./Omaha Skutt Catholic) was a four-year starter at goalkeeper on the Prairie Wolves' men's soccer team, concluding his playing career last fall with 20 career shutouts and 323 career saves. A First Team All-Conference honoree as a senior in 2024, Weis was also a standout in the classroom, earning three Academic All-Conference honors from the American Rivers Conference and recognition as a College Sports Communicators Academic All-American. Weis also served as the co-chair of Nebraska Wesleyan's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), where he led campus-wide mental health initiatives and mentored young athletes in the Lincoln and Omaha areas through youth soccer programs. Through his academic pursuits, Weis received grant funding to study transitional justice in Rwanda, where he conducted field research at governmental offices, community centers, genocide memorials, and a Reconciliation Village. He will be attending Harvard Law School this fall to prepare for a career in legal advocacy with a focus on human rights and restorative justice.

First awarded during the 2019-20 academic year, the Nick Mourouzis Postgraduate Scholarship is presented to two Chi Alpha Sigma inductees annually. This year's two $3,500 scholarship recipients were chosen from an impressive field of nominated Chi Alpha Sigma inductees. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must: be Chi Alpha Sigma inductees from an active chapter of the National College Athlete Honor Society; be seeking their postgraduate degree in the immediate upcoming academic year; be enrolled in a full-time program of studies; have exhausted all athletic eligibility before starting graduate-level coursework; and be formally nominated by their respective chapter advisor.
