Warhawks Take The Win From Wingate

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- A pair of first-half goals and a late penalty kick bolstered a 3-0 non-conference win for the Auburn University at Montgomery men's soccer team over Wingate University.

The Warhawks (2-1) built up an attack early in the match and capitalized on the opportunity that yielded a corner kick in the match's 18th minute.

Jonas Gunther arched a corner kick into the middle of the six-yard box, and Alan De Paula headed home the first goal of his AUM career.

Roughly two minutes later, a second Warhawk tallied the same feat.

In the 20th minute, Noah Fernandes scored the first goal of his AUM career on an assist from Benjamin Hoffman to double the Warhawks' lead.

The assist for Hoffman marked the first of his campaign.

The scoreboard remained quiet for the rest of the first half as the Warhawks took a 2-0 lead into the halftime intermission.

Scoring remained quiet in the second half until the 86th minute, when Sean O'Donnell converted a penalty kick to push AUM to a 3-0 lead and seal the win.

O'Donnell raced to a one-on-one opportunity with the Wingate goalkeeper, who drew a yellow card for his challenge.

Defensively, the Warhawks held the Bulldogs to just two first-half shots as sophomore Brock Marlow drew his first start of the season in goal.

The Wingate offense attack picked up in the second half as the Bulldogs found seven shot opportunities, but Marlow was up to the task on a pair of saves to help AUM to a clean sheet.

In total, Wingate posted nine shots with two on goal. On the other side of the bench, AUM's offensive attack posted a season-high 14 shots.

AUM drew six yellow cards in the match, and there were eight total cautions in the contest.

The Warhawks, who are receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, remain at home and welcome Lander University to the AUM Soccer Complex for Senior Day on Saturday, September 13, at 7 p.m.
