Warhawks Come Up Short Against Delta State on the Road

CLEVELAND, Miss - The Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team (2-18; GSC: 2-12) fell to the Delta State Lady Statesmen (10-8; GSC: 8-5), 81–62, on Thursday evening at the Walter Sillers Coliseum. 

First Quarter 
AUM came out firing in the opening quarter. Samya Brooks opened the scoring with a layup off an assist from Andie Flatgard, then went to the line and knocked down both free throws. Nevaeh Small added a basket of her own before Flatgard buried a three-pointer, extending her streak to nine straight games with a made three as the Warhawks jumped out to a 9–2 lead over Delta State. Brooks followed with another bucket, and Tamora Brown added the next three points with a layup and a trip to the free-throw line. The quarter closed with the teams tied at 14–14. 

Second Quarter 
The second quarter opened with Flatgard knocking down another three-pointer on the fast break. Delta State responded with a scoring run, stretching its lead to 29–17. Jaden Toney provided a spark with an offensive rebound before drawing a foul and converting one free throw. Brooks then came up with a steal from the Lady Statesmen and dished to Flatgard, who buried her third three of the night to help AUM cut into the deficit, 29–21. Small and Brooks added baskets of their own, and Paige Taylor scored her first point of the evening at the free-throw line. AUM headed into halftime trailing 39–26. 

Third Quarter 
The Warhawks found their rhythm in the third quarter, outscoring Delta State 22–18. Brooks opened the scoring by grabbing her own rebound and finishing at the rim for her 10th point of the game. Toccara Stagnaro followed with her first point of the night at the free-throw line. Brooks continued to apply pressure, converting a layup off a steal by Brown before adding a free throw. Brown attacked the lane for a driving layup, helping AUM cut into the deficit. After another layup from Brown made it a 40–50 game, she stayed aggressive late in the quarter, finishing at the rim and knocking down two free throws. AUM carried the momentum into the final period, trailing 57–48 heading into the fourth quarter. 

Fourth Quarter 
Flatgard knocked down a three pointer to open the final 10 minutes of the game, followed by buckets from Brooks and Small as the Warhawks continued to battle. Flatgard later knocked down her fourth three-pointer of the game, her second of the quarter, while Brooks added a point at the free-throw line. Brown capped the scoring for AUM with a three-point jumper. The Warhawks fell 81–62. 

Notables 
Samya Brooks led all scorers with a season-high 22 points, shooting 6-for-21 from the field and 10-for-11 at the free-throw line, while adding nine rebounds and three assists in 35 minutes. 

Andie Flatgard finished with 15 points, knocking down five three-pointers (5-for-9). She extended her streak to nine consecutive games with at least one three-pointer. 

Tamora Brown recorded a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, shooting 5-for-15 from the floor and 3-for-4 at the line. 

The Warhawks posted their highest-scoring quarter in the third, outscoring the Lady Statesmen 22–18. 

AUM shot 16-of-24 (66.7%) at the free throw line. 

The Warhawks scored 8 points in the paint, and the bench put up 5 for the team.

The Warhawks will stay on the road and play against Mississippi College on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 4 p.m. in Clinton, Mississippi.
