AUM Falls to Delta State on the Road, 2-1

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Auburn University at Montgomery women's soccer team (4-6-3, GSC: 2-5-1) fell 2-1 to Delta State (6-3-3, GSC: 5-1-2) on Saturday afternoon at Delta Field, with Chloe Wallace scoring for the Warhawks off an assist from Eva Hendriks. 

HOW IT HAPPENED  

First Half 
The Warhawks created several early chances, with freshmen Bella Ingstrom and Eva Hendriks recording shots in the opening four minutes. Courtney Pigford added an attempt in the eighth minute before Gabby Benavidez put a shot on goal in the 13th minute, but Delta State goalkeeper Kim Bircher made the save. The Lady Statesmen recorded their first shot in the 17th minute, but the attempt went wide. 

The Warhawks continued to press, with Chloe Wallace sending a shot wide in the 25th minute and Benavidez adding another attempt in the 30th minute. Wallace put another shot on goal in the 37th minute, but Bircher made the save. Delta State broke through late, as Millie Congerton scored in the 44th minute to give the Lady Statesmen a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. 

Second Half 
AUM responded quickly after halftime, as Wallace found the back of the net for her second goal of the season, in the 49th minute off an assist from Hendriks to even the match at 1-1. The Warhawks continued to look for another goal, while Azouer made saves on Congerton in the 51st minute and Avery Hooker in the 59th minute to keep Delta State from regaining the lead. 

AUM created additional chances as the half progressed, with Lily Hillegas recording a shot in the 64th minute and Hendriks putting two more attempts on goal in the closing stages. The goalkeeper made saves on Hendriks in the 81st minute and Ingstrom in the 87th minute to keep the match tied. 

Delta State broke through late, as Mariela Dolan scored in the 88th minute off an assist from Emma Earwood to give the Lady Statesmen a 2-1 lead. Hendriks added one final attempt in the 90th minute, but her shot went high as Delta State held on for the victory. 

Notables 

  • AUM outshot Delta State in both total shots (14-10) and shots on goal (5-4), marking the first time since 2017 the Warhawks had outshot the Lady Statesmen in both categories. 
  • Chloe Wallace scored her second goal of the season in the 49th minute, finishing the match with four shots, including two on goal, matching Hendriks for the team lead in attempts. 
  • Eva Hendriks recorded her second assist of the season on Wallace's goal and had four shots on the afternoon, one on goal.
  • Leslie Azouer recorded two saves while playing all 90 minutes in goal.
  • The orange and black recorded six corner kicks compared to three for Delta State and finished with 14 shots in the contest.
