NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team (3-7; GSC: 0-2) opened Gulf South Conference (GSC) play on Saturday evening against Trevecca Nazarene, dropping the two first games of the series opener. The Warhawks fell 8–7 in a 13-inning thriller in game one before Trevecca claimed a 7–2 win in the seven-inning nightcap.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One; AUM 7; TNU 8
The opening innings were quiet on both sides as the Warhawks and Trojans traded scoreless frames through the first. Trevecca Nazarene broke through first in the bottom of the second, using a pair of singles and an RBI ground ball to take a 1–0 lead. AUM answered in the top of the fourth, stringing together a few hits in the top of the inning to jump out in front. Christopher McNeill drew a walk and Cannon Miller reached on a bunt single before Dom Regira singled to right field to load the bases. Luke Turner followed with a two-run single, giving the Warhawks a 2–1 advantage.
AUM added to its lead in the sixth inning. After Regira got on base and Turner reached on catcher's interference, Kyle Hipp delivered the big swing of the night, launching a three-run home run to left field to extend the lead to 5–1. Trevecca chipped away in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single, but the Warhawks' defense responded with quick innings in the fourth fifth, and seventh.
Late in the eighth, the Trojans scored twice to cut the deficit 5-4. Auburn Montgomery answered in the ninth as McNeill, Miller, and Burns each recorded singles. Burns drove in a run to make it 6–4. Trevecca forced extra innings in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run home run, tying the game at 6–6.
Both teams were held scoreless through the 10th, 11th, and 12th. Auburn Montgomery broke tie in the 13th when Miller homered to put the Warhawks back on top, 7–6. Trevecca responded in the bottom of the ending, scoring two runs and securing the 8–7 decision in 13 innings.
Notables
Kyle Hipp drove in a team-high three RBIs, highlighted by a three-run home run in the sixth inning that gave AUM its largest lead of the game.
Luke Turner finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a two-run single in the fourth inning that put the Warhawks in front.
Cannon Miller went 5-for-7 with a solo home run in the 13th inning and scored twice
AUM pitching and defense held Trevecca scoreless in the fourth, fifth, seventh, 10th, 11th, and 12th innings.
This marked the first extra-inning game of the season for the Warhawks.
The Warhawks recorded 12 hits and worked six walks.
Game Two; AUM 2; TNU: 7
Trevecca struck first in the opening inning with a two-run home run to take an early lead, then added four more runs in the third to extend the advantage to 6–0. Auburn Montgomery answered in the fourth, as McNeill reached on a bunt single before Miller launched his second home run of the day to left field, cutting the deficit to 6–2.
The Warhawks held Trevecca scoreless in the fourth and sixth innings, but the Trojans tacked on an insurance run in the fifth to push the lead to 7–2. Trevecca closed out the game with a scoreless seventh inning to secure the series-opening sweep.
Notables
Scoring for the team can via long ball, as Cannon Miller homered for the second time of the day, driving in two runs.
AUM was held scoreless through the first three innings before breaking through in the fourth, accounting for all of its scoring of the game.
The Warhawks put together four hits in the fourth inning.
Jackson Reed started for the Warhawks, and Sellers Neuendorf made his season debut, providing relief late.
