BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Auburn University at Montgomery women's tennis standouts Melissa Yakup Pour and Mercedes Garcia Cid were recognized by the Gulf South Conference (GSC) on Wednesday morning, with Yakup Pour earning Player of the Week honors and Garcia Cid being named Freshman of the Week for the third consecutive week.
Yakup Pour continued to lead the Warhawks at the top of the lineup, going 2-0 in singles play at the No. 1 position. The No. 16-ranked Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) player opened the week with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Delta State before delivering one of the most impressive victories of the week against No. 6 Mississippi College. She defeated No. 5 Emily Buchanan in a three-set battle, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, handing Buchanan her first loss of the season after entering the match undefeated at 13-0.
In doubles action, Yakup Pour teamed with Nagisa Yonezawa at the No. 1 position, posting a 6-1 win over Delta State. The duo also faced Mississippi College's No. 3-ranked doubles pair and was tied 4-4 before the match went unfinished. Yakup Pour played a key role in AUM's 5-2 Gulf South Conference victory over Delta State while competing exclusively at the top of the lineup.
Garcia Cid continued her dominant freshman campaign, earning her third straight GSC Freshman of the Week honor after a perfect 2-0 showing in singles play. Competing at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, she opened with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Delta State's Yasmina Mayer before picking up a pivotal three-set victory over Rocio Martinez of No. 6 Mississippi College, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
In doubles, Garcia Cid partnered with Allison Blanco at the No. 3 position, going 1-1 on the week. The pair earned a 6-3 win over Delta State before falling to Mississippi College in conference play.
Garcia Cid has been a consistent force in the Warhawks' lineup throughout the season, continuing to deliver in key moments while contributing in both singles and doubles. Her efforts helped lead AUM to a 5-2 victory over Delta State and a competitive showing against a nationally ranked Mississippi College squad.
