MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team (8-23; GSC: 4-15) dropped game one of its series to No. 11 the West Florida Argonauts (24-6; GSC: 13-5), 8–6, on Friday night at the AUM Baseball Complex.
The Argos struck first in the opening inning, as center fielder Zack Stokes led off with a double and later scored on an RBI single from the first baseman to give West Florida a 1-0 advantage.
The Warhawks answered right away in the bottom half with Luke Turner delivering his fourth home run of the season, a solo home run to left field to even the score at 1-1.
West Florida regained the lead in the second inning with a home run from Stokes, pushing the score to 3-1. After a quiet third inning, the Argonauts extended their lead in the fourth to 6-1. Kobe Wiggins entered in relief, and the Warhawks got out of the inning by turning a double play to close the frame.
AUM began to shift the momentum in the fifth inning with its strongest offensive stretch of the night. Chance Sweeney led off with a single, and Kyle Hipp followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. The center fielder, Christopher McNeill, delivered in a big way, sending a three-run home run over the left field wall to cut the deficit to 6-4.
The Warhawks kept chipping away in the seventh. John Kiebler worked a leadoff walk and advanced into scoring position before coming home on an RBI groundout from Turner, making it a one-run game at 6-5.
West Florida threatened in the eighth, putting multiple runners on base, but Wiggins was able to work out of the bases' loaded jam and keep it a one-run game heading into the ninth.
In the final inning, the Argos connected on a two-run home run to extend the lead to 8-5.
AUM made one last push in the bottom of the ninth as McNeill reached base to start the inning before advancing into scoring position. Tucker Burns delivered an RBI single to bring the Warhawks within two, and Landon Baeder followed with a base hit to put multiple runners on, however the Warhawks fell 8-6 to the Argonauts.
Notables
Christopher McNeill led the Warhawks with his home run and three RBIs. McNeill delivered his seventh homerun of the season.
Luke Turner added a home run of his own, his fourth of the season, and drove in two runs for the Warhawks.
Chance Sweeney and Kyle Hipp each contributed key hits, including Sweeney's single that set up scoring in the fifth inning.
Tucker Burns and John Kiebler each drove in a run.
AUM collected 9 hits, including 2 home runs and 2 doubles, and four walks.
Huston Wynne, Kobe Wiggins, and Heath Henley combined on the mound for 6 strikeouts.
Both teams left 9 runners on base.
