MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The No. 13 Auburn University at Montgomery women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, 2-1, to No. 24 Embry-Riddle in its opening match of the AUM Capital City Classic on Friday.
The loss dropped the Lady Senators to 2-1 on the season, while the Eagles improved to 2-1.
"It was good to play a quality team and good to see what we need to work on," said head coach
Jamey Newsome. "It was a fun game and it was nice to see us battle back."
With the score tied at 1-1, the Eagles' Martine Olsen headed a ball past AUM's keeper
Daisy Burnfield to score what proved to be the game-winner with 12:06 left in the contest.
Valerie Obita scored for the Eagles in the 15th minute of the contest, providing the lone scoring of the opening period.
Junior
Jana Yates tied the score at one apiece in the 65th minute, when she took a cross from senior
Amber Elam in front of the goal and slammed home her third goal of the season. Yates also had four shots, all of which were on goal.
Elam led the Lady Senators with five shots on goal, including three in the final seven minutes, all of which were saved by Eagles' keeper Jennifer Grimes. Burnfield finished with six saves for AUM.
"This game gives us an idea of things we expose and things to work on," said Newsome. "This is a learning lesson and we can build from this game."
The Lady Senators return to play on Saturday against Brenau University at 2 p.m., to finish out the AUM Capital City Classic.
