JACKSON, Miss. ---- Less than 24 hours after dropping a tough decision to West Florida, the Auburn Montgomery women's tennis team bounced back and earned a 6-1 victory against NCAA Division I foe Jackson State Friday.
With the win, the Warhawks improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Tigers fell to 1-5 overall.
Per DI rules, the doubles portion of the match was worth just one point. However, the Warhawks took care of business, sweeping the three matches to secure the first point. At the top spot,
Paula Diaz and
Anna Rudolfova picked up a 6-3 victory, while
Celine Lenertz and
Kelly Southwood rolled by a similar score at the No. 2 position.
Alejandra Gil and
Iris Verweij gained a 6-4 win at the third position.
In singles, Southwood, Diaz, Lenertz, Gil and Rudolfova rolled in straight sets. However, the Tigers picked up their lone point of the match when Verweij was outlasted in three sets at the No. 3 position by Lucia Solis, 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-8).
The Warhawks will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 18, when they travel to Aiken, S.C., to take on USC-Aiken at 10 a.m.
