JACKSON, Tenn. – Freshman hurler
Savanna Holmes struck out a career-high 10 batters in the final game of a three-game series with Gulf South Conference foe Union University, but the Bulldogs were able to salvage the series with a 5-3 victory on Monday afternoon at Fesmire Field.
NOTES
• AUM falls to 22-5 on the season with a 7-5 mark in the GSC.
• Union improves to 13-11 overall and 4-5 in league action.
• The Warhawks win their third conference series of the season, going 2-1 against the Bulldogs.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Holmes struck out a career-best 10 batters in the contest, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits over 5.1 innings.
• Junior infielder
Kendall Tucker recorded her second home run of the season with a three-run pinch hit shot in the top of the seventh.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• AUM threatened in the top of the first, getting runners at second and third with only one out, but the Bulldogs were able to get a strike out and a ground out to end the threat.
• Union would break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. With runners at first and second Peyton Mathis hit a double to right center to plate two runners, scoring on a single by Taylor Manley two batters later to give the home team a 3-0 lead.
• The Bulldogs scored a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a single by Kristen Pickens with runners at second and third and then on a ground out to go up 5-0.
• The Warhawks got a pair of runners at first second to set up Tucker, who blasted a shot to right-centerfield to cut the deficit to 5-3. However, AUM was unable to plate any more runs and would fall to the Bulldogs on the road.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• The Warhawks scored three runs on three hits with one error.
• Union plated five runs on seven hits with no errors.
• Gabby Morris got the win to improve to 6-5 on the season. Morris allowed three runs on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
