About the Warhawks
AUM (10-8, 4-5 GSC) heads into their series with the Bulldogs having dropped two of three games to the University of Montevallo in GSC action last weekend. The Warhawks used a walk-off base hit from
Jonathan Brandt in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim an 8-7 win over the Falcons in the third and final game of the series on Saturday, March 2.
Through 18 games, the Warhawks are hitting .273 as a team, highlighted by five players batting over .300. Junior outfielder
Dalton Cobb leads the squad with a .377 batting average, 23 base hits and seven multi-hit games, while
Zach Feaster (.353),
Sage Smelley (.319),
Matthew Zielonko (.310) and Brandt (.310) all boast batting averages above the .300 mark.
Zielonko leads AUM, and unofficially ranks among the top five performers in the GSC, with four home runs, in addition to leading the Warhawks with 17 runs driven in, a slugging percentage of. 655 and an OPS of 1.108. The senior outfielder also leads the Warhawks with six multi-RBI games, and has reached based in his last 14 consecutive games.
Smelley (15), Cobb (11) and Brandt (11) have all also accounted for double-digit RBIs on the season, with Smelley and Cobb each posting four multi-RBI games in 2019.
On the base paths,
Quinterrious Arrington unofficially leads the conference with 12 stolen bases, while leading the Warhawks with 15 runs scored and ranking third in the Gulf South with 15 base on balls. The junior center fielder is batting a team-high .412 against GSC opponents, with 10 runs scored and an on-base percentage of .535 in conference action.
On the mound for the Warhawks, four different pitchers have compiled two wins, including
Todd Burkett, who has also recorded two saves for the Orange and Black in 2019.
Micah Henderson,
Sam Steigert and
Keegan Fairley have all logged a pair of wins for AUM, with Henderson also accounting for a save on the year.
Weekend starter
Troy Jones leads the Warhawk staff with 25 batters struck out over a team-high 26 innings pitched. Jones has tallied 17 of his 25 punch-outs in GSC play.
T. Burkett and Fairley have served as the two of the more reliable options out of the AUM bullpen in 2019, with both relievers holding opponents to a sub-.200 batting average on the season. T. Burkett holds a 2.70 earned run average, while Fairley boasts a 0.79 ERA on the year.
This weekend's series will mark for the Warhawk's first matchup with Union since 2011, with AUM holding a 14-7 series advantage over the Bulldogs.
