Banuelos Announces 2022 Women’s Tennis Class

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Auburn University at Montgomery head women's tennis coach Yair Banuelos has announced the 2022 signing class and the additions of Ane Ibarra, Ana Villavazo, Nahia Izco, Lea-Alassandra Mazzella, and Estefania Garcia to the women's tennis team.

"We are excited to announce this recruiting class," said head coach Banuelos. "The combination of 4 returners and five new players is promising for our program."

Villavazo (San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas) comes to AUM after graduating from Tecnologico de Monterrey in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas in 2018. More recently, she is joining the program after spending time at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida.

While playing for the Hawks at the JUCO level, she was a state, regional, and national champion in 2021. Her 2021 season ended with a perfect 12-0 record.

"Ana Villavazo is another transfer who comes from another top program.  She won the #4 flight draw in the JUCO national tournament and will bring a lot of competition to our team.  She knows what it takes to win against top players in the nation, and that will be a great strength for our program."

Garcia (Jiutepec, Morelos) is joining the Warhawks after graduting from Tecnologico de Monterrey in Cuernavaca, Morelos in 2021.

"Estefania Garcia is a very complete player.  She can do it all as an all-court player.  She comes to AUM bringing excellent results in both singles and doubles in the junior's level.  I am sure that her work ethic will drive her to achieve great things for us."

Izco (Pamplona, Spain) comes to Montgomery after graduating from her high school IES Mendillorri in her hometown.

"Nahia Izco is an outstanding player with tremendous fighting spirit, which will be key for the success of our program.  She was a top player in Spain and had victories against top-ranked players in Spain that are competing in NCAA Division 1 schools."

Mazzella (Brest, France) comes to AUM from her high school, La Perouse-Kerichen, in Brest, where she graduated in 2021.

"Lea-Alessandra Mazzella is a great player who is very dedicated and has a huge passion for the sport.  She is a power player who will bring a different style of game to our team.  I believe Lea can be a very dangerous player in her college career, and I am excited for her to join us in the fall."

The women's tennis team finished the 2021 campaign with a 10-7 record and their first-ever appearance and win in the Gulf South Conference postseason tournament.
