BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Andrew Elkins,
Anila Mantello, and
McKenzie Nowin have all been named to the Gulf South Conference All-Academic Teams while 73 Warhawks were placed on the 2021 GSC Fall Academic Honor Roll. It was announced by the conference office Friday (Jan. 21).
Elkins (Bay St. Louis, Miss.) most recently garnered CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team honors for his efforts both on the pitch and in the classroom. A Master of Business Administration graduate student, Elkins boasts a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the classroom. The Bay St. Louis, Miss. native additionally notched GSC All-Academic Team honors in the spring of 2021 and in June of 2021 was named to the GSC's Top 10 list, an accolade that recognizes the conference's top student-athletes from the previous academic year.
Mantello (Rueglio, Italy) earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors in the fall of 2021. She led the Warhawks and finished second in the Gulf South Conference with seven assists distributed in 2021 while also logging a pair of goals. A Criminal Justice major, Mantello boasts a 3.78 grade point average in the classroom.
Nowin (Fayetteville, Tenn.) also achieved CoSIDA Academic All-District status in the fall of 2021. She played a crucial role on the defensive side of the ball for AUM in 2021 while also netting a pair of game-winning goals. A Kinesiology major, Nowin sports a perfect 4.0 GPA in the classroom.
GSC All-Academic Teams are selected jointly by the FARs and SIDs for all sports in which the conference conducts an official championship. The minimum grade point average to qualify is a 3.20 overall as posted on the student-athlete's official transcript. Freshmen are not eligible for the All-Academic Teams, nor is any s/a who has not spent a full year in residence at the sponsoring GSC school and passed 24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours that count towards an identifiable degree program during the year at that school.
The All-GSC Academic Team nominees must be starters or significant contributors. Candidates must have lettered in the current year in order to be eligible. Although the threshold for selection is grade point average, other factors such as leadership, academic curriculum, community service, etc., may be considered when determining the All-GSC Academic Team
The GSC recognizes every student-athlete who has achieved a grade point average of 3.00 out of a possible 4.00 when it releases its annual "Academic Honor Roll". Student-athletes who only practiced, but did not compete against outside competition, are not eligible.
