MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery Baseball Team kicked off its 2022 campaign with a 7-1 victory over Miles College on Tuesday, Feb. 1 from Q.V. Lowe Field.
Newcomer
Brody Syer led AUM at the dish with three runs batted in and a pair of runs scored as part of a 2-4 day. The junior outfielder also slugged his first career home run for AUM in the victory.
Jackson Ceman also logged pair of hits with a pair of RBI's and a pair of runs scored.
Brook Brannon and
Joseph Hartsfield each knocked a double while
Kasey Clark and
Clayton Phillips all each registered a hit.
Michael Myers (1-0) earned the win in relief. The sophomore sidewinder tossed three scoreless innings while surrendering just three hits and striking out one.
Starter
Clay Slagle conceded just one run over the game's first three innings while striking out one on 43 pitches.
Jax Morris (2) and
Tommy Vickers (1) tossed the final three innings of relief, with both facing the minimum and striking out a pair each.
The Golden Bears delivered the game's first blow in inning number three, after a single to left and a wild pitch set up a one-out RBI knock through the left side to give them an early 1-0 advantage.
AUM quickly answered with a run in it's next at-bat, however, via an RBI single to left from Ceman to make it a 1-1 game. A leadoff double from Hartsfield, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Phillips, helped set up the opportunity.
The Warhawks would then take the lead for good in the fifth on Syer's mammoth two-run round-tripper to right field. A walk by Ceman one batter prior preceded the two-run, two-out blast.
AUM went on to add four runs of insurance in the bottom of the seventh on five hits. RBI singles from Ceman, Syer, and Clark, along with an RBI sac fly from
Zach Dew accounted for the damage in the frame.
The Warhawks outhit Miles 8-6 on the day and recorded all three of the game's extra-base hits.
AUM pitching commanded the strike zone all game, giving up just two walks and throwing just one wile pitch. The Warhawk staff induced 10 flyouts and nine ground-ball outs.
The baseball team will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 4 when they take on Montevallo in the first of three weekend nonconference contests. First pitch from Montevallo, Ala. is set for 2:00 p.m.
