MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery Baseball Team took advantage of a seven-run fifth inning to help guide them to a 10-9 victory in its series opener against Embry-Riddle on Friday, Feb. 11.
The win improves AUM's record to 2-4 overall and 5-3 against the Eagles at home all-time.
Joseph Hartsfield led AUM with three runs batted in on the night, highlighted by a solo home run in the sixth. The senior shortstop also scored twice while knocking a pair of base hits.
Brody Syer logged a team-high three hits, marking for his third multi-hit game of the season. Syer, who has hit safely in all six games for AUM, also drove in a pair of runs in the win.
Kasey Clark,
Jackson Ceman, and
Clayton Phillips each collected a pair of hits and scored a run, with Clark driving in one.
Zach Feaster drove in a pair of runs while
Jaylon Thornton also contributed an RBI base hit.
Andrew Cronan (1-1) picked up his first career victory for AUM, tossing 4.2 innings of relief. Cronan conceded just one earned run while striking out five.
Sam Steigert (1) hurled the final 1.1 innings out of the bullpen to grab his first save of 2022. The senior sidewinder retired all four batters that he faced.
Embry-Riddle drew first blood in the contest, with a three-run blast in inning number one to go up 3-0. The Warhawks responded in their next at-bat, however, with an RBI double from Clark that plated Ceman and shrank the Eagle's lead to 3-1.
The Eagles took advantage of an AUM throwing error in the third to bring across a run, but AUM would answer back with an RBI groundout from Feaster in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 4-2 in favor or Embry-Riddle.
After conceding an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning to go down 5-2, the AUM bats came alive in inning number five with seven runs on seven hits while also taking advantage of a dropped fly ball by the Eagles.
A pair of two-RBI knocks from Hartsfield and Syer, RBI singles from Feaster and Thornton, and an Eagle wild pitch accounted for the damage done in the frame.
The Eagles got a run back in the top of the sixth, but Hartsfield's towering solo shot to left in the bottom of the inning put AUM back up by four at 10-6.
Embry-Riddle scratched and clawed for three runs in the eighth, taking advantage of an RBI infield hit and a bases-loaded walk and hit batsman to trim AUM's lead to just 10-9. The AUM bullpen would hold out the rest of the way, however, to clinch the victory.
AUM outhit the Eagles in the contest, 15-9. The Warhawks left seven runners on base and stranded a total of nine Embry-Riddle base runners on the night.
The Warhawks will be back in action for game two of their three-game set with Embry-Riddle on Saturday, Feb. 12. First pitch from Q.V. Lowe Field is set for 1:00 p.m.
