VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Auburn Montgomery Baseball Team dropped both games of its Gulf South Conference doubleheader against Valdosta State on Saturday, April 16, falling 10-0 in game one and 4-3 in extra innings in game two.
The Warhawks' record now sits at 24-17 overall and 13-11 in GSC play.
GAME ONE
Nick Freeman led AUM with three hits in game one while
Clayton Phillips added a pair of hits.
Starter
Luke Turner (5-3) shouldered the loss in game one, giving up just two earned runs over five innings.
Jake Chase,
Will Collins,
Michael Myers,
Tommy Vickers,
Mario Galloway,
Mason Elmore, and
Cole Kehoe all made an appearance out of the bullpen for the Warhawks.
Valdosta State tallied a pair of runs in both of its first two at-bats, taking advantage of a Warhawk throwing error and an RBI sac fly in the first. The Blazers' next two runs came via an RBI double and an RBI groundout in the second to take a 4-0 lead.
VSU's 4-0 advantage held all the way until the seventh, when they would push across another run on an RBI single. From there, the Blazers would tally five runs in the eighth on a two-run homer and a pair of RBI knocks to give way to the 10-0 final score.
AUM left seven runners on base in game one, including a pair in both the first and fifth innings.
GAME TWO
Freeman once again led AUM at the dish, knocking a pair of base hits in game two.
Joseph Hartsfield slugged the game-tying RBI double in the bottom of the seventh while
Brody Syer also drove in a run.
Andrew Cronan worked a season-high seven innings, conceding just one run on two hits while striking out a pair.
Sam Steigert (2-3) took the loss in game two, giving up three runs in the eighth inning.
Freeman led off game two with a triple to left-center but was thrown out at home via fielder's choice one batter later to nullify the Warhawks' scoring chance.
VSU cracked the board in the bottom of the first, bringing around a leadoff double with a pair of ground outs to take a 1-0 lead.
The Blazer's lead would hold all the way until the bottom of the seventh, when Hartsfield would lace a two-out double to right-center with two strikes that brought home Dew from first and would force extra innings.
AUM scratched a pair of runs across in the top of the eighth, scoring its first run on a balk with runners at first and third. A dropped fly ball by VSU off the bat off Syer put the Warhawks up 3-1.
The Blazers tied up the game in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run blast, followed then by a one-out single to center. A stolen base combined with a Warhawk throwing error brought the winning run to third before being knocked in one batter later.
The Warhawks will return to action on Wednesday, April 20 against Georgia Southwestern. First pitch from Q.V. Lowe Field is set for 4:00 p.m.
