MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery Baseball Team picked up a 5-4 midweek victory over Georgia Southwestern State University on Wednesday, April 20 from Q.V. Lowe Field.
With the win, AUM improves to 25-17 overall and 18-5 at home this season.
Zach Feaster knocked a team-high three base hits on the day, including a two-run homer in the third inning. The senior backstop also drove in a team-high two runs and scored twice.
Brody Syer scored twice in the contest and added a hit while
Matthew Marfice registered a hit and an RBI.
Zach Dew logged a hit and a run while
Joseph Hartsfield drove in a run.
Will Collins (2-2) struck out two over the first four innings while giving up three runs to earn the win.
Clay Slagle (3) notched his team-leading third save of the season by tossing the final two frames and conceding just one hit.
Michael Myers worked a pair of scoreless relief innings while
Jax Morris surrendered a run in one inning of work.
The Hurricanes took advantage of a leadoff walk to begin the contest, moving Miles Hartsfield to second on a 5-3 groundout and bringing him in to score on an Anthony Angelino RBI single up the middle to go up 1-0 in the first.
The Warhawks battled back by hanging a three-spot in the second inning, using a Marfice RBI sacrifice fly, an RBI fielder's choice from Hartsfield, and a GSW balk with runners on the corners to go up 3-1. Three-consecutive singles from Syer, Dew, and Feaster set the table for AUM in the inning to load the bases with nobody out.
After giving up a pair of runs to the Hurricanes in the top of the third via solo shot and an RBI sac fly, the Warhawks answered in their next at-bat with a two-run, go-ahead home run by Feaster to left-center. The blast, Feaster's team-leading sixth of the season, came with one on and one out in the inning.
A pair of leadoff singles, followed by a walk, loaded up the bases for the Hurricanes to start the eighth inning. Slagle would enter from bullpen and strike out the next batter and then record an unconventional F7 sac fly turned double play when
Micah Christian threw behind a Hurricane runner at second base that left early to end the inning.
In the ninth, Slagle worked around a leadoff single to work a scoreless inning and slam the door shut for the win.
The Warhawks will be back in action on Saturday, April 23 for their first two games of a three-game Gulf South Conference Series at Christian Brothers University. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader from Memphis, Tenn. is slated for 1:00 p.m.
