Baseball Bested at #9 Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Auburn Montgomery Baseball Team fell 10-1 at No. 9 Columbus State University on Wednesday, April 27, dropping to 28-18 on the season.

Nick Freeman and Zach Dew both logged a pair of hits while Clayton Phillips drove in the Warhawks' lone run. Matthew Marfice registered a hit and a run scored while slugging a double.

Will Collins (2-3) shouldered the loss. The junior lefty surrendered four earned over 1.1 innings while striking out one.

Mason Elmore tossed a team-high 2.2 innings of relief while Michael Myers contributed two innings out of the AUM bullpen. Jax Morris accounted for a scoreless eighth inning while Huell Lumpkin accounted for an inning of relief.

The Cougars wasted no time getting on the board, tallying five runs over their first two at-bats. CSU got a pair of runs on an RBI single and a bases-loaded walk in the first, combined with a pair of RBI singles and a sac fly in the second to go up 5-0.

The Warhawks cracked the scoreboard in the fifth inning on an RBI single to right center from Phillips. Marfice led off the frame with a double to left center and was moved over to third on a 4-3 groundout from Joseph Hartsfield before eventually coming in to score.

The Cougars took advantage of the long-ball in the bottom of the fifth, launching a solo shot and a two-run blast to extend their lead to 8-1. They would add on an RBI single in the sixth and a solo home run in the eighth before giving way to the final score.

The Warhawks will return home and wrap up regular-season play with a three-game Gulf South Conference series against Shorter, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, April 29 at 3:00 p.m. from Q.V. Lowe Field.
