MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Auburn University at Montgomery men's soccer head coach
Matthew Thorne has announced hiring
Alex Latorre as the new assistant coach. Latorre spent the last year as a volunteer coach at UAB.
"I am absolutely delighted to bring in a top coach with so much experience in the game," said Thorne. "Alex has a wealth of experience with his previous roles, including head college coach, club director, and professional playing background. More importantly, Alex is a great person, and he will be a fantastic addition to the AUM family."
Latorre brings NCAA Division I experience after having spent one year at UAB. While with the Blazers, Latorre aided his team to the Conference USA tournament semifinal for the first time since the new head coach had taken over the Blazers in 2018.
"It's an honor to work at such an amazing institution as well as with coach Thorne who has gotten his soccer program to the Elite 8," said Latorre. "I'm looking forward to helping AUM men's soccer continue to be successful, and I'm excited to get started in August."
While working with the Blazers, Latorre was also involved in the youth soccer game as well as he is the U13-U19 coaching director at the Hoover Soccer Club. He currently oversees coaches in the U13-U19 age groups and assists in the recruiting and assigning of qualified youth coaches.
Latorre also brings head coaching experience to the Warhawks as he spent five seasons as the head coach of York College in Nebraska. In 2019, his program climbed more than 100 spots in the NAIA national rankings and broke the school record for wins that season.
His success with the men's program led to his leadership as head coach of the women's program simultaneously. On the women's side in 2019, he led his team to a victory against the No. 1 team in the conference and landed a player on the second-team all-conference list.
He played his collegiate soccer at Oklahoma Christian University and aided his team to the best record in school history in 2001 with a 17-4-1 record and was on the program's first team to make a national tournament appearance.
Latorre would go on to play professional soccer in the National Professional Soccer League. He was drafted by the Kansas City Attack, and following his time in the NPSL, he played for the Minnesota Thunder of the USL First Division.
