MEN'S NOTES
- AUM enters the 2023 GSC Championships ranked No. 7 in the USTFCCCA South Region Poll.
- The black and orange have put together three Top-10 finishes as a team this year (second at Jacksonville State Foothills Invite, ninth at Florida State Invite, and seventh at Queens University Royals Challenge).
- Basil Koech has secured Freshman of the Week Honors from the GSC twice this season, while Dalton Benefield also won the league's first honor of the season in that category.
- Each of Koech's four efforts this season has resulted in a place on one of AUM's all-time performance lists - a school record 5K (15:54.60) to open the year at JSU, an 8K school record the next week at John Hunt Park with a 24:49.00, the third-fastest 8K time at the FSU Invite (24:56.50), and the eighth fastest 8K time in program history (25:23.47) at the Royals Challenge in Charlotte, N.C.
- At the Southern Showcase at John Hunt Park in mid-September, the Warhawks turned in the program's fastest 8K average in school history.
- Mark Foster (sixth - 25:25.00) and Dalton Benefield (ninth - 25:40.00) have also cracked AUM's Top 10 on the 8K performance list.
FIVE ON THE FIELDS
- Four Top-25 teams will take the starting line as ranked by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross County Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). In the men's poll, Lee was listed 12th, while Alabama Huntsville followed at No. 21. Mississippi College also received votes. On the women's side, Lee was ranked fifth, while coming in at No. 24 was Mississippi College.
- Alabama Huntsville and Lee have shared dominance of the men's race in the past, winning a combined 11 out of the last 12 men's championships. The Flames are the reigning conference champs and are looking to capture back-to-back titles for the first time since doing so in 2017 and 2018. UAH meanwhile will try to hoist its first title since 2021 and eighth all-time.
- Lee's women's team has also been on a winning streak, securing the last six championship races, second-most by program in GSC history.
- Mississippi College's men's team returns last season's 2022 individual champion, Jan Lukas Becker.
- On the women's side, since 2016, Lee has had the top individual finisher five times. This season, however, will feature a first-time winner.
