Atkinson, Blake Help Men's Soccer Douse Lee Flames 1-0

CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Behind the first collegiate goal from Nick Atkinson and a huge penalty kick save from goalkeeper William Blake, the Auburn University at Montgomery men's soccer team secured another road win in Gulf South Conference play on Friday night in the Volunteer State.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • AUM controlled a healthy portion of the possession throughout the middle stages of the first half as both teams looked for an advantage.
  • In the 26th minute, AUM goalkeeper William Blake sent a ball long up the field toward Nick Atkinson, who took a touch and launched a laser into the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
  • The Warhawks out-shot the Flames 7-4 in the opening 45 minutes, including 4-1 in the shots on goal category. 
  • Both teams traded fouls and a couple of corners out of the halftime intermission, but the game remained scoreless after an hour of play.
  • AUM was whistled for a foul in the box in the 70th minute, but William Blake made a key save of the penalty kick off the foot of Eamon McLaughlin to keep the Flames off the scoreboard.
  • A fervent, substitution-filled final five minutes ticked off the clock to end the match as the Warhawks remained unbeaten with a 1-0 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • 44 fouls were whistled in the match and five yellow cards were shown.
  • The assist from Blake marked his first of the year.
  • AUM shut out an opponent for the fifth time this season and the fourth match in a row.
  • Blake posted three saves on the night, none bigger than the penalty kick, and tallied his fourth shutout of the campaign.

"I'm so proud of these lads," head coach Matthew Thorne said. "They never stopped working for each other. That was a massive goal from Nick, and an even bigger save from Will on the penalty kick. We will enjoy this win tonight and come back tomorrow to prepare for another tough GSC match. Up The Warhawks!"

UP NEXT

AUM concludes its road trip with a visit to Ben Brady Field in Rome, Ga. as the Warhawks clash with the Shorter University Hawks at 2:30 p.m. CT.
