Walk-Off Win Helps Baseball Split Doubleheader Against Embry-Riddle

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team split a doubleheader against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Friday night courtesy of a walk-off-7-6 win over the Eagles in the nightcap.

Cooper Doughman smacked an RBI single to center to score Tyrese Rooks, and a throwing error from the Eagles allowed Kasey Clark to scurry home and score the winning run.

GM 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • A pair of AUM throwing errors in the top of the first inning allowed the Eagles to jump out to a 2-0 advantage.
  • Tyrese Rooks added a sacrifice fly that plated JC Tunnell to cut the lead in half in the fifth inning. 
  • In the seventh, Brendan York bounced an RBI single right back up the middle to plate Tunnell and tie the game 2-2.
  • A two-RBI single from Dylan Lifrieri in the eighth proved to be the difference as AUM was shut down in the ninth. 
GM 1 ON THE MOUND 
  • Clay Slagle scattered two hits and allowed two unearned runs, with seven strikeouts in six innings.
  • Grant Hickman (0-1) was saddled with the loss as he allowed a pair of runs with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of relief.
  • Lucas Baggett fired 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts to finish the contest.
GM 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • RH Frankland and Cooper Doughman drive home runs to center field and left field, respectively, as the Warhawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
  • York and Clark each added an RBI in the second inning as AUM built a 5-0 lead.
  • An RBI groundout and a base hit up the middle helped the Eagles put two runs on the board in the fifth inning.  
  • Embry-Riddle added a run in the seventh and a run in the eighth before an RBI single and sac fly sent the Eagles in front 6-5 headed to the bottom of the ninth inning. 
  • Tyrese Rooks led off the bottom of the ninth with a single up the middle. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and Clark drew a one-out walk to put two runners on base. After a pop-out for the second out of the inning, Doughman singled to center to plate Rooks and tie the game. As the Embry-Riddle relay throw came in, the ball caromed away at third base and allowed Clark to score the winning run for AUM.
GM 2 ON THE MOUND 
  • Luke Turner allowed a trio of runs in 6.2 frames, did not walk a batter, and struck out four Eagles.
  • Trey Bacon allowed an unearned run to score in 0.2 innings of relief.
  • Brett Pitts (1-0) earned the win and allowed a couple of runs on three hits in a pair of relief innings for the Warhawks.
NOTABLES: 
  • AUM's starters Slagle and Turner combined to allow just three earned runs in 13.1 innings of work on the day.
  • York, Tunnell, Rooks, Doughman, and McWhorter each collected multi-hit games.
  • Frankland and Doughman each clubbed their first home runs of the season in game two.
  • McWhorter, Jackson Ceman, Frankland, and Rooks also each added a double.

  • "We learned a lot about ourselves tonight as a team and as a program," said head coach Franklin Bush. We competed through the final pitch. That's AUM baseball. Can we be consistent in that? My hope is that they will continue to support us as we work towards finding our identity as a team and as a program."

The Warhawks finish the series against Embry-Riddle with game three on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Q.V. Lowe Field. First pitch is slated for noon.
