Baseball Warhawks Knock off No. 25 Lee in Series Finale

CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- The Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team scored three runs in the first inning to jump in front early, and Clay Slagle logged five strong innings for his third win of the season as the Warhawks took down 25th-ranked Lee University on Sunday afternoon in the Volunteer State.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • A three-spot in the top of the first inning staked AUM to an early lead. After Zach Dew singled, Kasey Clark drew a hit by pitch and Tyrese Rooks rolled a single through the right side to put AUM up 1-0.
  • Cooper Doughman added a sacrifice fly and Ashton Thomas laced a single to center field to make it 3-0 visitors. 
  • Lee turned in a pair of doubles in the third to get on the board, but the Warhawks responded.
  • The Warhawks found a four-run fourth to take a 7-1 lead. JC Tunnell's RBI groundout, Dew's RBI single, Clark's RBI single, and Rook's RBI double ballooned the lead for the visitors.
  • RH Frankland added an RBI single up the middle in the fifth inning. 
  • Lee added a run in the sixth, but the damage had been done as AUM held on for the win.
ON THE MOUND 
  • Clay Slagle (3-2) snared his third win of the season, with five strong innings. He scattered a run on five hits, did not issue a walk, and struck out two.
  • Brett Pitts logged 3.0 innings of relief and allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts.
  • Ryan Slaten tossed a scoreless ninth.
MANAGER'S CORNER
  • "We have to get back to playing AUM baseball," said head coach Franklin Bush. "Consistency is the word that keeps getting brought up within our program. We know we can hold the standard, but can we do it consistently? Today was a step in the right direction. We will build on this heading into next week. The best is yet to come!"
NOTABLES
  • The Warhawks picked up their sixth win of the season against a team ranked in the Top 25 or receiving votes in the Top 25 poll. 
  • Dew, Rooks, Thomas, and Frankland all put together a multi-hit afternoon.
  • Thomas reached base four times in five tries. He posted an RBI single, a double, two runs, walked once, and reached on an HBP. 
  • Slagle did not issue a walk for the third time this season. He has walked only six hitters in 36.2 innings of work.

  • The Warhawks finish out the three-game conference weekend against the 25th-ranked Flames on Sunday, March 17 at noon CT.
