Warhawks Rally in Singles to Defeat Cameron, 4-1

TYLER, Tx. - The Auburn University at Montgomery women's tennis team (3-4, 1-0 GSC) earned a 4-1 victory over Cameron University (4-1) on Friday afternoon at the GSC/Lone Star Crossover Tournament, playing to clinch after securing the deciding point in singles action.

COACH MICHAEL O'BRIEN COMMENTS
"I am very proud of the girls in their performance today. We have talked a lot about energy and supporting each other during the match, and they did an excellent job with that today. Even after losing the doubles point, their energy was so good and we believed we could get the job done in singles. It really gave us confidence to go and compete at a high level, and that helped us get the result we were looking for. It was a great start to the weekend, and I am confident we can carry this momentum over for the next two matches."

Doubles
The Cameron Aggies claimed the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. At the No. 2 position, Allison Blanco and Mercedes Garcia Cid were first off the court, earning a 6-2 victory over Alexa Garcia and Nil Kalkaven to give the Warhawks an early edge.

The Aggies responded at No. 3 doubles, where Ana Clara Campigotto and Sofia Neri fell 6-4 to Alexa Lugo and Isabella Quintero, evening the doubles tally.

The point was decided at the No. 1 spot, as Melissa Yakup Pour and Nagisa Yonezawa battled Jenna Goessel and Adel Ismagulova but came up just short in a 7-5 decision, securing the doubles point for Cameron.

Singles
AUM bounced back in singles play, winning four completed matches to secure the 4-1 team victory. At the No. 2 position, Sofia Neri was first to finish, dominating Adel Ismagulova in a 6-1, 6-0 straight-set win to even the team score.

Shortly after, Melissa Yakup Pour followed with a strong performance at the top spot, defeating Jenna Goessel 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to give AUM the lead.

At No. 3 singles, Mercedes Garcia Cid continued the momentum, earning a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Alexa Garcia and moving the Warhawks within one point of the match win.

The deciding point came from the No. 4 position, where Nagisa Yonezawa battled through a three-set thriller. After taking the first set 6-0 and dropping the second 3-6, Yonezawa outlasted Isabella Quintero in a tightly contested third-set tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5), sealing the 4-1 victory for AUM.

Matches at No. 5 and No. 6 were left unfinished once the team result was decided.
