BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Freshman Mercedes Garcia Cid of the Auburn University at Montgomery women's tennis team was named the Gulf South Conference (GSC) Women's Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office Wednesday morning.
Garcia Cid competed at the No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles positions in matches against Middle Georgia State and Augusta during the week. She competed in her tenth and eleventh matches of the season.
At Middle Georgia State on March 6, she faced Aya El Marrasse Zarioui at No. 2 singles, with the match left unfinished while trailing 2-1. In doubles play, Garcia Cid teamed with Allison Blanco at the No. 2 position but fell 3-6 to the pairing of Aya El Marrasse Zarioui and Yana Prihach.
The freshman followed with a strong showing in AUM's 5-2 road victory over Augusta on March 7. At No. 2 singles, Garcia Cid rallied for a three-set comeback victory, defeating Andrea Gonzalez 5-7, 6-2, 6-0. She also paired with Blanco at No. 2 doubles to secure a 6-4 win against Priscilla Landi and Julieta Palma, helping the Warhawks claim the doubles point.
Garcia Cid finished the week 1-0 in singles (1 unfinished) and 1-1 in doubles, playing a key role in AUM's road win over Augusta.
