From Singles to Doubles: AUM Tennis Continues National Success

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Auburn University at Montgomery tennis programs continue to make a mark nationally, with both the men's and women's teams earning recognition in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II rankings.  

Men Ranked Nationally at No. 45 
The Auburn University at Montgomery men's tennis team is now ranked No. 45 nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II Top 50, reflecting a season of strong play and steady growth. 

Through the first part of the season, the Warhawks have faced a challenging slate of nationally ranked opponents, including No. 11 Columbus State, No. 10 North Georgia, No. 9 Embry-Riddle, No. 24 Midwestern State, and No. 5 UT Tyler. Despite the tough schedule, AUM has notched key victories over Tuskegee (6-1), Christian Brothers (4-2), Middle Georgia State (4-1), and No. 30 Augusta (4-0), showcasing the team's depth, resilience, and ability to perform under pressure. 

Recent road wins highlight the Warhawks' balance of veteran leadership and emerging talent. At Middle Georgia State, AUM dropped the doubles point at No. 2 and No. 3 but secured the overall win with strong singles performances from Guillermo Vedia Sanchez, Harry McDonagh, Augustin Wallaert, Lucas Rosvall, and others. Against No. 30 Augusta, the Warhawks swept doubles at the top two positions, led by Giuseppe Bonaiuti and Jami Savolainen as well as Daniel Margoulis and Vedia Sanchez, while key singles victories from Bonaiuti, Vedia Sanchez, and Mark Nawa completed the 4-0 sweep. 

Top contributors this season include Bonaiuti and Savolainen, who have anchored the No. 1 singles and doubles positions, along with freshman Vedia Sanchez, who has made an immediate impact and earned GSC Freshman of the Week honors. The mix of experience and youth has helped AUM remain competitive in Gulf South Conference play and maintain a national presence in ITA rankings.

Singles Spotlight: Giuseppe Bonaiuti
Giuseppe Bonaiuti has earned national recognition, checking in at No. 54 in the latest ITA Division II singles rankings. Competing primarily at No. 1 singles, Bonaiuti has been a steady presence at the top of the Warhawks' lineup throughout a challenging schedule featuring nationally ranked opponents. 

This season, he has notched key victories over Tuskegee (6-1, 7-5), Christian Brothers (6-4, 6-2), and Cameron University, where he rallied from a set down to claim a 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 win. Most recently, Bonaiuti secured a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Augusta, continuing his strong play in the top position. 

In doubles, Bonaiuti has primarily partnered with Jami Savolainen at No. 1, helping anchor AUM's lineup while competing against top doubles teams throughout the season. His consistent performance in both singles and doubles has been integral to the Warhawks' success and national presence.

Singles Spotlight: Melissa Yakup Pour 
Melissa Yakup Pour continues to shine at No. 16 in the latest ITA Division II singles rankings, holding down the No. 1 singles position for the Warhawks. She has been a consistent force this season, securing key victories over Tuskegee (6-2, 6-3), Christian Brothers (7-5, 6-1), Cameron University (6-4, 6-3), Middle Georgia State (7-6), and Augusta (6-3, 6-1). Yakup Pour has also faced some of the nation's top competition, challenging highly ranked opponents such as No. 6 Embry-Riddle and No. 3 West Alabama, showcasing her competitiveness and ability to perform against elite teams. Her consistent play at the top of AUM's lineup has been a major factor in the Warhawks' strong national presence this season.

Doubles Spotlight: Melissa Yakup Pour & Nagisa Yonezawa 
The doubles duo of Melissa Yakup Pour and Nagisa Yonezawa has climbed to No. 30 in the latest ITA Division II national rankings, anchoring the No. 1 doubles position for the Warhawks. The pair has been a consistent threat this season, posting key victories over Tuskegee (6-1), Middle Georgia State (7-5), Augusta (6-3), and No. 3 West Alabama (6-4), demonstrating their ability to perform under pressure. 

Melissa and Nagisa have faced top-ranked opponents throughout the season, including No. 6 Embry-Riddle and challenging matchups at North Georgia and Cameron University, showcasing their chemistry and resilience. Their strong play at the top of AUM's doubles lineup has been a major factor in the Warhawks' success in both Gulf South Conference and national competition.
