BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Freshman Mercedes Garcia Cid of the Auburn University at Montgomery women's tennis team was named the Gulf South Conference (GSC) Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week, as announced by the conference office Wednesday morning.
Garcia Cid continued her strong play for the Warhawks with an impressive performance against No. 3 West Alabama, earning AUM's lone point in singles competition. Competing at the No. 2 position, she delivered a straight-set victory over Alexa Milliam, 6-3, 6-1, showcasing control throughout the match against one of the top teams in the region. Milliam is currently ranked No. 18 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
In doubles action, Garcia Cid teamed with Allison Blanco at the No. 3 position and battled in a tightly contested matchup, falling just short in a tiebreaker, 6-7 (8-6).
The freshman has been a consistent contributor in the lineup this season, picking up multiple key singles victories and continuing to develop as a reliable presence for AUM in both singles and doubles play.
Garcia Cid earns the honor after a strong showing the previous week, where she helped lead AUM to a 5-2 road victory over Augusta with a three-set comeback win at No. 2 singles (5-7, 6-2, 6-0) and a doubles victory at the same position.
