Tanner Gordon Named AUM Baseball Head Coach

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Auburn University at Montgomery Director of Athletics Erik Maas has announced the hiring of Tanner Gordon as the next head coach of the Warhawk baseball program.

"We are thrilled to welcome Tanner back to the Warhawk family to lead our baseball program into its next chapter," said Maas. "Tanner brings a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge from both the collegiate and professional levels, and his leadership, player development background, and passion for the game will have a significant impact on our program and student-athletes."

A veteran pitching coach with multiple conference championships and NCAA postseason appearances, Gordon returns to AUM with a 14-year coaching career across collegiate and professional baseball, while also bringing a familiar connection to the Warhawk program.

"I'm incredibly honored and humbled to return to Auburn University at Montgomery as the head baseball coach," Gordon said. "AUM has always held a special place in my heart because of the time I spent here as a player in 2010 and 2011. The history and tradition of this program are strong, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to help lead it into the future."

A former AUM Senator, Gordon competed for the program for two seasons before continuing his playing career professionally in the Arizona Developmental League and North American Baseball League.

"I want to sincerely thank Erik Maas, the search committee, and Dr. Stockton for believing in my vision for the program and entrusting me with this opportunity. I'm also thankful for the impact my former coaches, QV Lowe and Marty Lovrich, had on me during my time at AUM. They helped shape me not only as a player, but as a coach and person as well. I'm excited to get you work."

Most recently, Gordon served as a minor league pitching coach for the Seattle Mariners organization with the Arizona Complex League Mariners in 2026. He impacted player development across multiple levels of the Seattle Mariners system, working with top prospects during spring training and Mariners minicamp, while also serving as an MLB and MiLB rehab pitching coach.

Prior to making the jump to pro ball, Gordon spent two seasons at Mercer University as the pitching coach and co-recruiting coordinator. During his time, the Bears secured a top-100 high school recruiting class, according to Perfect Game, in three consecutive years, while earning the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award in the classroom.

Under Gordon's guidance, Mercer finished second in the SoCon in ERA, led the league in innings pitched, and ranked second in saves and WHIP. Nationally, the Bears finished among the NCAA leaders in ERA, strikeout-to-walk ratio, WHIP, and walks. Gordon also developed multiple standout pitchers, including Bryant Olson, who was selected by the Washington Nationals in the 13th round of the 2024 MLB Draft.

In a previous volunteer stint with Mercer, Gordon helped lead the Bears to an NCAA Regional in 2015.

Before joining the full-time staff at Mercer, Gordon served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Virginia Commonwealth University during the 2023 season. Although Gordon spent only one season with the Rams, his recruiting efforts helped VCU to a regional in 2024.

Gordon spent four seasons at Murray State University from 2019-22 as an assistant coach, pitching coach, and recruiting coordinator. During his time with the Racers, Gordon helped guide the program to back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time in nearly 50 years, while lowering the team's ERA by four runs during his first season on staff.

Prior to Murray State, Gordon spent three seasons at Trevecca Nazarene University, in a variety of coaching roles, where he helped guide the program to capturing back-to-back Great Midwest Athletic Conference regular season championships in 2016 and 2017.

Gordon's coaching experience also includes stops at Middle Georgia State College, and Andrew College, where he served in various recruiting and player development roles.

Known for integrating technology, biomechanics, and mental performance into player development, Gordon has built a reputation for developing elite pitching staffs, and preparing athletes for professional opportunities. Throughout his career, he has mentored MLB Draft selections, professional signees, and numerous all-conference performers while emphasizing academic success and growth beyond the field.

Gordon earned a degree in Sport Management from Southern New Hampshire University in 2014 and becomes the fourth head baseball coach in AUM history.
