MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Auburn Montgomery women's basketball player
Kyla Rooks was named the fifth AUM Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award winner of the fall semester, it was announced on Tuesday.
This award is presented to a student-athlete certified for eligibility and involved in a varsity sport that contributes to their team's success through their individual leadership skills, their commitment to teamwork, their extra effort during practice and their demonstration of sportsmanship. Additional contributing factors include academic success, character and exemplary community outreach, as well as athletics performance during the previous two weeks.
Rooks, a redshirt-senior guard from Birmingham, Ala., returned to the hardwood after redshirting last season without skipping a beat. She leads the team in assists this season and has averaged 4.3 per game during the two-week span to go with 6.7 points and 2.3 steals.
Outside of competition, Rooks and the women's basketball team have been heavily involved in the community with Housing Move In on Campus, Pike Road Car Pulling, Eastdale Mall Football Fan Day, Educational Childhood Day Car and the Color Run on campus organized by the Wellness Center. The team has also hosted a Professor Practice and a clinic with the proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish foundation.
"Rooks is well deserving of this award," head coach
Dan Davis said. "She is always pushing herself to be the very best she can be on and off the court. She always puts others before herself and is the ultimate unselfish teammate."
The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 9 at Samford in an exhibition bout starting at 2 p.m. The Warhawks return to their home court on Tuesday, Dec. 12 with Spring Hill coming to town for a 6 p.m. contest.
