Baseball Travels To National-Ranked Delta State For Gulf South Conference Series

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team hits the road for the program's first road Gulf South Conference series this weekend, taking on the league's defending champions and ranked second nationally Delta State. The three-game series begins on Saturday, Mar. 3 in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m., with the finale slated for Sunday at 1 p.m.

About the Warhawks
AUM (6-6, 0-3 GSC) hits the road after beginning Gulf South Conference play at home against Alabama Huntsville, falling in all three games against the Chargers.
 
Offensively, Auburn Montgomery is hitting .263 (101-384) with a .388 slugging percentage off the strength of 19 doubles, one triple and nine home runs while posting 52 walks and 43 RBI. Sophomore infielder Hayden Friesen leads five Warhawks hitting over .300 with a .476 average, followed by senior infielder Parker Moman, senior infielder Nathan Langley, junior infielder Jonathan Brandt and senior infielder Curtiss Johnson with marks of .429, .405, .386 and .344, respectively. Langley and Brandt each have 17 hits, with Langley hitting a team-best five doubles while sophomore catcher Kyle Khoury has AUM's lone triple and Brandt boasts two home runs. Langley also posts a team-high 11 walks and six RBI.
 
On the mound, AUM sports a 3.81 ERA while tallying 69 strikeouts with 33 walks in 101.2 innings of work to date. Redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher Hank Scott logs a team-high 25.1 innings with a team-best 20 strikeouts and two victories to go with a 2.13 ERA. Freshman righty Sam Steigert has made a team-leading seven mound appearances without allowing a run to score over 7.2 innings while Langley, Steigert and junior right-handed hitter Brett Lightsey all have one save.
 
About the Statesmen
Delta State (11-1, 3-0 GSC) plays its home GSC opener on an 11-game winning streak, including a three-game GSC-series sweep of Valdosta State, having not lost since a season-opening setback at Lynn University.
 
The Statesmen are hitting .314 (147-468) as a team with a GSC-leading .473 slugging percentage coming from 22 doubles, two triples and a league-best 16 home runs while tallying 94 RBI and 42 walks. Reigning GSC Baseball Player of the Year and 2017 Tino Martinez Award recipient, honoring Division II baseball's Most Outstanding Player, Zach Shannon leads DSU in almost every offensive category with 22 hits, 20 RBI, 17 runs scored, seven home runs, five doubles, a .962 slugging percentage, .500 on base percentage and .423 batting average. Juwan Burney matches Shannon with one triple, while Jamell Newson draws a team-best seven walks.
 
On the mound, Delta State has a team ERA of 4.67 with 108 strikeouts and 60 walks in 108.0 innings. Hayden Davey and Seth Birdsong both have made four starts for the Statesmen, with Davey leading the team with 22.0 innings, 24 strikeouts and three victories while sporting a 2.86 ERA and .171 opposing batting average. Tyler Walton makes a team-high six appearances on the mound, with Peyton White recording all three of the team's saves.
