Baseball’s Win Streak Snapped in Home Loss to #8 Columbus State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery Baseball Team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of a 15-4 loss to number-eight ranked Columbus State on Wednesday, Feb. 23.

With the loss, AUM's record falls to 9-5 overall.

Nick Freeman knocked a team-high three hits on the day, with a run scored and an RBI. Joseph Hartsfield also drove in a run with a pair of hits while Clayton Phillips added a hit and an RBI.

Jackson Ceman registered a pair of hits for his team-leading seventh multi-hit game while Brody Syer upped his current hitting streak to 14 games with a double in the second inning.

Starting pitcher Will Collins struck out four batters over 4.1 innings while conceding just two runs for a no decision. Michael Myers (1-1) was credited with the loss on Wednesday, surrendering three runs in 0.2 innings.

Mason Elmore, Jake Chase, Jax Morris, Huell Lumpkin, and Cole Kehoe all saw action on the mound on Wednesday.

The Cougars struck first with a sac fly in the third that put them up 1-0, but AUM responded with a run its next time up on a two-out RBI infield hit from Hartsfield that plated Freeman and made it 1-1.

The Warhawks plated a pair their next time up in the fourth, with a two-out RBI single from Phillips scoring the first run. AUM's second run of the frame came across after a Freeman single to left resulted in a CSU fielding error that brought home Zach Dew to make it 3-1.

The Cougars knocked their first two of three home runs in the fifth to retake the lead, accounting for a solo shot and three-run blast to put them up 5-3. AUM would respond in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice from Freeman to make it just a 5-4 lead for the Cougars.

CSU broke the game open in the seventh inning with five runs on two hits, most notably a one-out grand slam after a bases-loaded hit batsman to go up 10-4. The Cougars would go on to score one run in the eighth and four in the ninth before giving way to the final score.

The Warhawks will set their sights on Gulf South Conference play, with a three-game weekend series at West Georgia up next. AUM will kick off the series with a doubleheader from Carrollton, Ga. on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 12:00 p.m. (CST).
