Baseball Suffers Doubleheader Sweep at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery Baseball Team dropped a pair of games on Sunday, Feb. 6 to dip to 1-3 on the season. The Warhawks fell 6-5 in 10 innings in game one and 8-0 in game two.

GAME ONE
Jaylon Thornton and Joseph Hartsfield each logged three hits in game one, with Thornton driving in a run and Hartsfield scoring once.

Kasey Clark and Brody Syer both knocked a pair of hits, with Clark driving in two and Syer one. Zach Dew registered a hit and an RBI while Nick Freeman accounted for a hit and a run scored.

Starter Luke Turner scattered three runs over four innings of work while striking out three in the no decision. Jake Chase and Michael Myers both tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief while Tommy Vickers and Sam Steigert both hurled 0.2 innings of shutout relief from the bullpen.

Andrew Cronan (0-1) shouldered the loss. Cronan tossed 0.2 innings of relief, including the final out with two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, before conceding the game-winning run in the 10th.

The Warhawks wasted no time getting on the board, with three runs on three hits in the top of the first. Syer got the scoring action going with an RBI single, followed by a two-RBI double from Clark two batters later to put AUM up 3-0.

Montevallo tied up the contest in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out, three-run home run. The blast was preceded by a two-out ground-rule double and a base on balls.

AUM regained the lead in the fifth on an RBI knock through the right side from Thornton with two away. A Syer single, followed by a Dew walk two batters later, set up the opportunity for Thornton.

A Dew RBI single in the top of the ninth gave AUM an insurance run and saw them take a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the inning. Montevallo delivered, however, with a two-run shot off of Landon Pritchett with one away to extend the contest.

After a sac bunt put the game-winning run on third in the bottom of the 10th, the Warhawks walked the bases loaded but surrendered the walk-off base hit up the middle to end game.

Despite outhitting Montevallo 15-11 in game one, the Warhawks left 13 runners on base in the contest.

GAME TWO
Brook Brannon and Nick Freeman each tallied a team-high two hits in game two, with Freeman stealing a base. Caleb Beaver, Jordan Moore, Matthew Marfice, and Syer each added a hit.

Clay Slagle (0-1) was charged with the loss. The freshman right hander surrendered three earned runs over four innings while striking out three. Jax Morris was tagged for one earned run over two innings while Huell Lumpkin and Mario Galloway each tossed 0.2 scoreless innings of relief.

Montevallo scored its first two runs of game two in the second inning when they took advantage of a two-out RBI double, followed by a Warhawk fielding error.

The Falcons doubled their lead with one swing of the bat in inning number four, taking advantage of a two-run homer to go up 4-0. They would go on to collect one more run of insurance in the fifth and three more runs in the bottom of the eighth before giving way to the 8-0 final score.

AUM was edged in total base hits in game two by Montevallo, 10-8. The Warhawks left 10 runners on base in the setback.

The Warhawks will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 9 for a 3:00 p.m. contest at Spring Hill College.
