Baseball Closes Out Regular Season with 8-0 Victory on Senior Day

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery Baseball Team picked up an 8-0 victory over Shorter University on Senior Day to claim the Gulf South Conference series two games to one over the Hawks and close out its 2022 regular-season slate.

With the win, the Warhawks improve to 30-19 overall and 18-12 in GSC action, marking for their first 30-win season since making the jump to division two.

Prior to first pitch, Sam Steigert, Joseph Hartsfield, Jake Chase, Shelton Clevenger, Matthew Marfice, Zach Feaster, Jackson Murphy, Corey Armstrong, Jaylon Thornton, Blake Sheffer, and Jax Morris were all recognized as members of the Warhawks' 2022 senior class.

Brody Syer drove in four of the Warhawks' eight runs on the day, highlighted by a three-run homer in the third inning. Caleb Beaver slugged a pair of doubles and scored twice while Zach Dew and Clayton Phillips each knocked a pair of hits and drove in a run.

Clay Slagle (4-3) tossed a season-high scoreless 6.1 innings to earn the win. The freshman right-hander struck out six batters while conceding just four hits.

Sam Steigert provided the final 1.1 innings of work out of the bullpen, giving up just one hit over the final 1.2 innings.

Syer's three-run blast to left-center got AUM on the board in the third. The home run marked for Syer's team-leading seventh of the season and was preceded by a leadoff single from Nick Freeman and a double down the left-field line by Beaver.

Kasey Clark followed suit a few batters later with an RBI groundout to shortstop which was followed by an RBI single to left from Phillips that made it 5-0.

The Warhawks' next two runs came on RBI knocks in the sixth inning by both Syer and Dew to give them a 7-0 advantage. The final run of the game for AUM came in the bottom of inning number seven when Freeman avoided an inning-ending double play by legging out an RBI fielder's choice to bring in Hartsfield from third.

Heavy rain and lightning in the area forced the game to be called in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Warhawks will return to action for round one of the 2022 GSC Baseball Championship in Oxford, Ala. on Friday, May 6. An opponent and start time will be announced once it becomes official.
