MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Auburn University at Montgomery Soccer head coach
Matthew Thorne has named
Owen Burnett as the new Assistant coach for the soccer program.
"We are delighted to have Owen join our staff," said Thorne. "Owen has valuable experience in the ACC and more importantly his character is the perfect fit for our program. He will be a tremendous addition to Men's soccer and our University as a whole."
Burnett joins AUM's staff after graduating from Christopher Newport University with a degree in Business Management. While at Christopher Newport, Burnett played four seasons for the Captains.
A native of Pennington, N.J., Burnett appeared in 42 games for the Captains as a forward. He scored five career goals, including three in the 2021 campaign – in which he made a career high four starts.
He started his coaching career as the Virginia United FC head coach in 2023 before joining Virginia Tech staff as a Volunteer Assistant. While on-staff as an assistant, the Hokies defeated the reigning national champs, Clemson, 3-0.
Burnett was promoted to Director of Operations for Virginia Tech's staff where he coordinated all logistics, recruiting and team video film. He also served as the Camp Director for Tech's Soccer Camps that included over 20 camps per year.
"I'm really looking forward to the challenge that the GSC provides," said Burnett. "It's a very strong conference with lots of physicality and old rivalries. Matty's a big reason why I joined the group, looking forward to bringing more silverware to AUM and continue to elevate the program to new heights!"
