On November 7, 1980, Dr. James Williams was appointed to succeed Dr. Hanly Funderburk as the second Chancellor of Auburn University at Montgomery. Dr. William's first position at AUM was as Chairman of the Department of Education. he served in this capacity from 1969-1973. He was named Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Director of Graduate Studies in 1973, a position he held until he was named Chancellor in 1980. During his tenure as Chancellor, the AUM athletic program initiated the following sports: women's tennis, women's basketball, women's soccer, baseball and men's soccer. Under his leadership, AUM athletics became recognized as one of the best small college programs in the nation. AUM teams won championships at the conference, district, regional and national levels. Four of AUM's coaches were named NAIA National Coach of the Year during his tenure.
